Case Study
Challenge:
A medical device start-up needed a low-power wake-up sensor. Their initial design used a rechargeable battery and a charging cradle with a magnet to control a normally-closed reed switch. This set-up was costly and prone to failure if the device wasn’t returned to the cradle.
Solution:
Standex Detect collaborated with the start-up to redesign the product. They replaced the rechargeable battery with a primary battery, eliminated the charging cradle, switched to a lower-cost normally-open reed switch, and used a magnetic fastener that also triggered the wake-up function.
Outcome:
The redesign reduced costs, improved reliability and simplified user interaction. The optimised magnet and reed switch configuration enhanced manufacturability and performance.
